Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Australian Kodály Certificate (AKC)?
The Australian Kodály Certificate (AKC) is the only Australian, fully-accredited and nationally-recognised program of teacher training in the Kodály concept. This course provides pre-service, current classroom and studio music teachers with the skills and knowledge to deliver a sequential, cumulative, developmental and aural-based music curriculum.
The certificate is normally completed over three years of part time study with an accredited Course Provider and candidates choose to complete a three year sequence in one area of specialisation: Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary. Each area of specialisation requires the completion of three sequential levels (years) of study.
Further information on the AKC can be found at this link.
What is the course workload like?
Course workload varies depending on mode of enrolment. Each AKC level requires a minimum of 60 contact hours, 30 of which must be face-to-face. Kodály Queensland runs a hybrid course with both online classes (lectures) and intensive, in-person weekend classes. These hours are not inclusive of any personal study time or the time spent completing homework or assessment tasks. For more information on contact hours for our upcoming course/s, please head to the ‘Timetable’ section of the course listing.
Our courses are specifically designed to accommodate all contact hour requirements (including compulsory in-person components) and are approved each year by Kodály Australia’s Education Committee to ensure ongoing compliance. For more information about Course Requirements, please head to the AKC curriculum page here.
Which enrolment option is right for me?
We offer a variety of enrolment options for participation in our Australian Kodály Certificate courses.
Assessment Participants receive an official certificate with their grades recorded. Upon satisfactory completion of all course materials, they are able to proceed to the next sequential course in their studies (e.g. Level 1 to Level 2). Assessment Participants are expected to have a high level of commitment to study and are required to attend all lectures and intensive weekends. They must also complete all homework and assessment tasks in order to pass their level.
Assessment students receive individualised feedback from industry experts. All assessment tasks that are submitted will be given detailed responses that can be implemented in the classroom immediately.
Typical assessment tasks include:
- Teaching a 3-minute focus activity
- Writing a short lesson focus with explicit steps
- Answering questions about the teaching purpose of a curriculum song
- Conducting the choir in a short canon or song
- Participating in choir
- Completing an aural musicianship test
Participants wishing to gain the full Australian Kodály Certificate qualification must complete all three levels of their relevant stream, enrolled for assessment.
Audit Participants receive an audit certificate as recognition of professional development. This certificate does not count towards study requirements for the full Australian Kodály Certificate and only serves as a recognition of continued learning. Audit Participants are still expected to have a strong level of commitment to study, however attendance at online or in-person lectures is optional. Recordings of each online class will be sent and can be accessed at a time convenient for the student. Completion of assessment tasks is not allowed and students do not receive individualised feedback.
Audit Participants cannot enrol in the next sequential level for assessment without first completing the previous level in assessment.
Concession (Student) Enrolment is available to all current Student Members or those who are eligible for student membership with Kodály Australia and can be completed as either an Assessment or Audit Participant. Due to the highly subsidised price of Student Enrolment, there is no discount to course fees when enrolling for Audit Participation.
I'd like to participate, but I live far away from where the intensives weekends are held. Can I still enrol?
We welcome enrolment from everybody no matter their area of residence.
Those who would like to enrol as an Assessment Participant must attend three intensive weekends along with every online lecture. To assist in offsetting costs of attending these in-person weekends, we offer current Kodály Queensland Members living 300km+ away from the intensives location the opportunity to apply for a travel bursary. Further details on intensive weekend locations can be found by heading to the current year’s course listing.
If you are unable to make all three intensive weekends, we recommend you enrol as an Audit Participant.
I live interstate, can I still receive a travel bursary to attend intensive weekends?
Our travel bursaries are strictly for current, eligible Kodály Queensland Members residing in Queensland and are not available to members of other Kodály Australia Branches.
Our travel bursary is intended to encourage and support participation from Regional and Remote Queensland members to ensure quality music education is available to all students across our large state.
I'm worried about retaining all of the content! Are lectures recorded?
Yes, online lectures are all recorded and uploaded to Vimeo for students to refer to as they complete the course. We strive to get all lectures uploaded within a week.
I would like to change my mode of enrolment from assessment to audit/audit to assessment. Is this possible?
Prior to commencement of the course, it is possible to change your mode of enrolment at any time. Those changing between audit and assessment modes must pay, or are entitled to a refund of, the difference in course pricing. In the event of a refund, any transaction fees incurred by Kodály Queensland may be deducted from the total refund amount.
Changing mode of enrolment mid-course is entirely up to the discretion of the lecturers and course conveners. Any refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
I have more questions! Who can I contact?
We’re so glad you’re curious about our course! Please contact akc@kodalyqld.org.au with any further questions and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
